The Next big bet would be on, Energy 20-20!
The rapid depletion of non- renewable sources of energy has surfaced as a big worrying challenge for the time we live in. Despite, all the discussions, experiments, conventions and if’s and buts’ the question remains what will be the next resource of energy that can adequately run everything that has been previously running on conventional fuel such as, automobiles, house hold equipments etc.

The answer of the above problem lies in symbolism to transforming from the fossil fuel age to a clean energy economy.  The more we adopt the renewable resources of energy such as wind and solar power the more we can help sustain the balance between the life and the nature.
Well some countries have already established exemplary infrastructure to harness, utilize and produce clean energy from these natural forces. For example, Germany which has the largest offshore wind farm that produces almost twelve times the energy as any nuclear power plant produces and is expected to increase the green energy footprint by double in the coming decade with the help of its wind turbines.

The next big commendable example of clean and renewable energy infrastructure would be an iconic steam-era railway bridge in London which is believed to become the world's largest solar bridge ever. It is expected to generate an estimated 900,000kWh of electricity every year.
These examples set a new paradigm in the industrial Age and set a new benchmark in the future energy market.

The solar powered battery from Okaya Power is a small step for providing you with clean and renewable energy.  The batteries harness solar energy and works on the very initiative to educate people and sustain eco-friendly, clean environment.

Flexible Energy for the Flexible Electronics!
You call out battery and something as big as a compartment of the mobile or inverter or UPS loaded with lithium- ion, or other chemicals takes upon our mind.  We have always reincarnated battery as a solidified, bulky, and filled with chemicals (several) in our conscience but what if our electronic items could derive their energy from a battery as thin as a plastic film, weighing almost negligible and could be flipped with help of fingers.

This blog in no condition is a Sci-fi trip or discussing a technology that you might soon see in a Hollywood geek movie in fact the battery discussed above has already been created by a team of researchers from several universities. As per a report published in a daily newspaper this team has created a battery made with tiny, closely-spaced solar cells embedded into a stretchable polymer.

How it will work
Each cell within the battery is connected
to each other via "'serpentine' connections - wires that loop back on themselves in a repeating S shape, with that string of loops itself looped into an S shape. When the polymer is stretched without breaking or tweaking the wires or "pop up”, additionally, according to the team, the battery can be charged wirelessly over a short distance.

The buzz in the market surrounding these flexible, stretchable electronics is not just about its shape and performance but also the problem it might face in entering the market that’s lack equally flexible power sources. As per the team these flexible battery-operated electronics could be used in a variety of applications, most notably "those that involve devices integrated with the outside of the body, on the skin, for health, wellness and performance monitoring."

Help your bike’s Battery Live Longer!!

Your motorcycle and scooter battery is one important item that must regularly be checked so that your ride doesn’t end in a distressing work.
You must always keep a check on your battery if you are leaving your vehicle is not driven for more than a couple of days. It’s a good idea to get a battery tender to keep your battery in optimal condition.

Scooter or Motorcycle Battery Basics

12-volt batteries as normally said is not really 12 volts. Twelve volts is just a nominal, convenient term used to distinguish one battery from another. A completely charged 12 volt battery can nearly last few hours (or days) with no load being drawn from it (or charge going to it), will balance out its charge and measure about 12.6 volts between terminals.

Remember the battery’s resting voltage is only 12.0 to 12.1 it means only 20 to 25% of its useful energy remains. It’s either a goner or it has been deep cycled, and a battery can only be deep-cycled a limited number of times before it is indeed dead.

How to maintain your battery??

If your motorcycle or scooter doesn’t start, all you need to check is battery. A little checking and periodic maintenance goes a long way. The battery can be in an awkward location to readily access – time to get out the manual.
A few precious minutes of monthly maintenance will pay in a short span of time by giving up undeterred t ride. It will keep your battery working perfectly and also help to ensure a long battery life. You must keep the battery charge to 100%, remember if battery is not in use for more than two weeks you could have lights dim, your horn might sound wimpy, and the starter could sounds weak.

Tips to maintain your battery

Monthly battery maintenance will extend battery life and will make sure your motorcycle or scooter will be ready to start when you want to go.

• Get a pair of rubber gloves and protective glasses or goggles
• Get the battery out from bike or scooter and begin by spraying the battery with battery cleaner.
• Use your screwdriver to disconnect the negative (-) wire on the battery first. Remove the positive wire (+) and remove the battery strap or belt. Pull the battery out SLOWLY, so the overflow tube does not catch.
• Take out and place the battery on some newspaper. Clean it to make it free from dirt grime prior to opening the caps on the battery chambers. If you find corroded terminals take a wire brush and brush and clean, wipe filings and dirt away with a dry cloth. Spray battery cleaner onto a lint free cloth and wipe the terminals.
• If the overflow tube appears dirty, kinked, or clogged, remove the overflow tube and clean it by spraying battery cleaner through the tube. Run the tube under hot running water until it’s clean. Used compressed air to blow out the water and re-attach.
• Check the amount of fluid (electrolyte) indifferent chambers. Checks the fill line does not pass it in fact leave it a bit below that. If they appear lower than this level on a flat surface, you should fill them up. To Look inside for excessive sediment, and sulfating. Top up only with distilled or deionized water (NOT TAP WATER). Tap water has minerals which will reduce battery effectiveness and life. Replace the filler caps.
• Re-install the battery in the reverse order or removal making sure that the overflow tube goes back in the correct position.

Are ‘Humans’ the Source of Future Energy on Earth!!

The biggest challenge of our times is to devise out an alternative of renewable energy sources which are being consumed at a gigantic rate. We are striving towards energy efficiency and sustainable resources, and may be this is why more and more interesting researches are surfacing that is talking about different and exciting ways to power our lifestyles. The corporations, universities and labs are harnessing the potential of renewable energies, including one we get from sun and geothermal.

But there are several other sources from what we use today that could provide power for many things, from our high-tech lifestyle to our homes. For example a naturally occurring human body with 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit is incredibly naturally renewable source of energy in itself.

The human body seems a very promising useful green energy option for the future. Nanotechnology, the new and very enchanting frontier of cutting-edge science, is also rapidly becoming a viable way to power our world. The thermodynamics too is not just limited to the chapter you read in physics but actually a driving force and a novel way to get things going, using a carefully balanced system to preserve energy, keeping items hotter for longer periods of time.

The blog discusses an astounding technology that is forming the face of energy of tomorrow the way we look at energy generation.

BODY HEAT

In Sweden a transportation real estate company, have researched and devised a way to create usable energy from the heat of the bodies of million commuters who pass through Stockholm Central Station each day.

According a report published on the same here is how it works: Heat exchangers in the Central Station's ventilation system convert the excess body heat into hot water. That is then pumped to the heating system in the nearby building to keep it warm. In practice, the system lowers the energy costs of the building by 25%.

Another very intriguing research surfaced which said we do not always need thousands to create energy – in fact just a jacket could do so!! The researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory created a body heat energy-harnessing jacket using silicon nanowire technology. The "personal power-jacket" would use body heat to charge cell phones and other electronic devices on your person.

Beyond your own phone and tablet, body heat could be used to power a number of energy- and fuel-guzzling objects, even airplanes. Last year, Charles Champion, executive vice president for engineering at Airbus, envisioned a plane for the year 2051 that uses body heat to power lights and transparent view screens.

Do you think human body can become the ultimate source of energy that we will use in future in solar or thermal?? Or should they be reserved for sci-fi books and space movies?

A chair to rock you and charge your iOS Devices

We witness crazy buzz whenever a new version of iPhone and iPad is launched in the market. The news captivates the entire blogging fraternity and the reviews, (mostly assumptions) flood geeky sites. But what about the charger that gives power to your pristine and extravagant gadgets??

A Zurich-based Micasa Lab has created a dexterous, relatively untapped energy source to keep iOS devices alive– the rocking chair. Don’t just it too soon, it’s one of kind chair that does not only generates power, rocking back and forth to charge iOS devices but has inbuilt power speakers into the backrest that gets power from the same.

The chair features a classic rock chair design; and is handmade from Swedish oak with five layers of paint providing a shiny finish. A generator device is provided on the back of one of the rockers, which harness the kinetic energy, and provides charge to an inbuilt battery that powers the inbuilt speakers and/or recharges a connected iDevice. The makers of the chair have claims an hour or rocking can easily recharge 40 percent of an iPad 3 battery.

A special arm-mounted iPad dock is given on the right-hand-side arm, keeping in mind the convenience of the sitter. This would allow the device to be connected to the dock and on the same time will remain in the sitter’s line of sight while rocking. According to its manufactures this chair would be available in five Colors- white, black, green, blue or red – and is sure to be one of the most relaxing ways to rock out.

All you must know about your ‘Inverter Batteries’

There is basic phenomenon on which a battery works, such as, in normal operation, water is lost from a flooded lead-acid battery due to evaporation and electrolysis takes place into hydrogen and oxygen, which escape into the atmosphere. Even One Faraday of overcharge can result in loss of about 18 g of water per cell. The Evaporation involved is relatively small part of the loss except in very hot, dry climates.

Thus, it becomes extremely important that the electrolyte be maintained at the proper level in the battery. The electrolyte works as ionic conductor and works as a significant factor in the transfer of heat from the plates. If the electrolyte remains below the marked plate levels than it results in inactive plates; this also causes a great amount of heat within the space of the battery that gets concentrated in various parts of the battery. It also causes “Sulfation” of the dry portion of the plates which may not be reversible.

• Thus it is advised to check the water level and consumption in Periodic intervals.Consumption check is advised because it can serve as a rough check on charging efficiency and may warn when adjustment of the charger is required.

• In case of these batteries replacing water periodically can be the reason for a major significant maintenance cost, but water loss can be effectively reduced by the controlling and limiting the amount of overcharge and by using hydrogen and oxygen recombining devices in each cell where possible.

• Note that excessive heat caused due to charging can cause battery damage. It is very important to read specifications carefully; in many cases the expensive “Caps” may need to be replaced before the end of battery life.

• Overfilling or spilling of water must be avoided because the resultant overflow of acid electrolyte will cause tray corrosion, ground paths, and loss of cell capacity.

• Gassing during overcharge will stir the water into the acid uniformly. In freezing weather, water should not be added without mixing as it may freeze before gassing occurs.

• Only distilled water should be added to batteries. Although dematerialized or tap water may be approved for some batteries, the low cost of distilled water makes it the best choice.

How about using a WOODEN LIGHT BULB to save energy!!

Humans have a great affinity towards innovations and why not, every new invention is bound to make our life simple, better, and qualified for the time we live in. Let it be a shoe that can charge you mobile devices or a bicycle that could adjust itself according to the terrains you take it on. All such things elucidates that we are making bigger and ingenious steps than ever.

In this countdown the next invention is a‘wooden light bulb’ which might sound impossible to us but the concept is already in the market. The bulb is invented by a Japanese artist and today it stands as an actual light source.

This Bulb is made using LED which produces lesser amount of heat as compared to the traditional tungsten. On the other hand it consumes less amount of energy. This dexterous design would not just help us cut the amount of heat we produce with our lights but bills too.

The artist has created a working wooden light bulb by designing an extremely thin wooden shell that wraps around an LED light bulb. This is not just because LEDs produces little heat; the risk of fire is minimal. Instead, the light bulb produces a soft glowing effect.

According to the experts this Light bulb is an innovation to achieve the mix of modern design and traditional craft technique. This Wooden Light Bulb project also won the Kyoto Renaissance Design Competition and is still under development.

This innovative creation is not simply a sustainable approach of using wood and an LED to create this light bulb that has send frenzy in the market. The symbolism behind the design that gives this modern bulb its appeal is craft wrapped in technology to make a classy style statement.

Now a walk in the park could recharge your devices!!

Althoughwe might have already not seen ‘Get Smart’-style shoe phone but it is true that anytime soon, your mobile phone may receive its power from your shoes. The researchers from University of Wisconsin have developed an amazingin-shoe system that harvests the energygenerated by walking or running. Currently, this energy generated is lost in the form of heatbut this technology can enable us to store energy in an incorporated rechargeable battery.

The energy-harvesting technology is said to be based on a process known as "reverse electro wetting”. This process is believed to convert mechanical energy to electricity via a micro fluidic device, in which thousands of moving micro droplets (of an undisclosed non-toxic, inexpensive liquid) interacts with "a groundbreaking nanostructured substrate. This process is have a power capability ofup to one kilowatt per square meter (10.76 sq. ft.), plus this works with a wide range of mechanical forces, and is able to output a wide range of currents and voltages.

The researches have focused on every aspect of wear and tear of the shoe thus they have provided special hermetical sealing to the battery so that no water or dirt could trespass. For providing power to the phone or any other mobile device, a detachable wire is given, although the researchers are also looking into the use of conductive textiles and wireless inductive coupling.

Besides generating power for your devices, it could also serve as a mobile WiFi hotspot, linking the phone to a wireless network.
This innovation is one stop solution for power generation and of course a snazzy foot wear.

Have we found an alternate fuel in ‘Nanowires’??

We are all aware that hydrogen is considered a "clean" (resource) fuel because of the generated waste, which is just water. But the conventional way through which it can be produced is electricity, which usually is produced through the burning of fossil fuels. The Researchers at (University of California) San Diego have now developed a "3D branched nanowire array” which they claim could produce clean and cheap hydrogen fuel on a mass scale.
The ‘nanowires’, are abundantly made from natural materials such as zinc oxide and silicon, which are made (mimic) in the structure of trees, with every single tree sprouting out hundreds of nano-sized "branches." Like any forests, this structure maximizes the amount of solar energy that can be captured, these smart vertical structures traps and absorbs sunlight to the maximum, unlike flat surfaces that reflect it.( like one we use)

The researchers have maximized the amount of solar energy captured through these nanotree structures to produce hydrogen through a process called photoelectrochemical water-splitting. This process generally uses planar solar cells to produce hydrogen as similar to the electrolysis of water, but this team of researchers says that their invention ‘nanowire’ arrays produce more hydrogen fuel efficiently.
The researchers explained, that the nanotree (vertical) structure also allows extraction of even small bubbles of hydrogen at a rapid rate to maximize the output of the hydrogen gas. Additionally, this nanostructure has been devised with enhanced surface area which is almost 400,000 times as compared to its planar counterparts for chemical reactions.

While the team asserts that ‘nanotrees’ is a resource of future as it’s a very economical way to produce hydrogen fuel on a mass scale, they are aiming to go further. The team is looking forward to use the nanotree structure to produce a devise that would not only harnesses solar power to produce hydrogen fuel, but also captures CO2 from the atmosphere to reduce carbon emissions at the same time.

The team explains, they are trying to mimic exactly what plant does to convert sunlight to energy, "We are hoping in the near future our 'nanotree' structure can eventually be part of an efficient device that functions like a real tree for photosynthesis too."

Why Is The Future Of Energy ‘Uncertain’ And ‘Dark’??

The energy crisis looming over the world is one of the threatening and the greatest economic and social problems of our time. And the biggest question today that awaits a substantial answer is, Is there any possible way to decrease greenhouse gas emissions footprints at this crucial time when developing and both developed nations are rigorously increasing their consumption? And can we possibly encourage the upbringing of alternative fuels to ease the dependence on oil and gas?

Robert Topel, A renowned professor (labor economics) at Chicago University, moderated a discussion on the crucial topic of energy consumption at the school's 60th Annual Management Conference with industry experts who were not very positive on the idea that fossil fuels will be replaced anytime soon.

Well accepting the fact that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to anything, Professor Topel, in the video below, explains that once you solve the issue of energy consumption, and "other things fall into place itself".

From Liter of LIFE to Liter of LIGHT!!

What if anything as normal as an old plastic bottle with water could cast a difference between light and darkness?

An almost no-cost solution is a pursuit of uplifting the quality of life of many a hundreds of impoverished households in Philippines who does not have access to any sort of energy or electricity and unlikely has to use (dangerous) kerosene lamps indoors. These dazzling solar lamps act as skylights which amplify and reflect the rays of the sun during daylight hours – and are effectively fulfilling theneed of indoor light bulbs that too without using a speck of electricity at all.

This initiative might sound a bit unfathomable to us who have, access to readily available light source and might take it for granted, but the truth is millions of Filipinos families in impoverished villages and slums do not have availability of any kind of indoor light at all. And many of those who have tried to get ingresspower from electrical grid run disastrous risk of fire-related incidents involving any faulty electrical connections. No indoor lighting often means ineffective work or study – which limits productivity and a chance to better your life.

So how do the lights work?
The idea was originally conceived by Alfredo Moser, a band of incredible students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) working with a foundation named‘My Shelter’ and discovered that they could mimic a light bulb by filling any one liter recycled plastic bottle with just two familiar substances – water and bleach. These lamps can be fitted through a hole made in the roof by cutting, plugging the bottles in and then sealing it off.

Would you believe that just one liter of mixture in plastic bottle made from water and bleach can give off the same amount of light as a standard incandescent 60 watt light bulb! But the only difference would be, that no incandescent bulb has a life span of 5 years but this solar lamp can keep working for as long as five years!!And if you worry about the water inside the bottle don’t be. The bleach keeps the water free of germs.

The army of volunteers has already installed more than 10,000 homes with these incredibly basic but ridiculously powerful solar lamps throughout Manila.

Have you been able to come across with something as different as this in your life time?

Wait did someone say ‘Ice vest’!!!

With temperature soaring above 45 degrees the scorching summers are haunting the coolest bit of us!! Driving us all to stay at our air-conditioned work places or home. There are ways to hide or to stay away from the fiery summers but some people are just not meant for it, and making some awkwardly prodigious ‘not so cool’ innovations..!!

A few weeks ago, a news made rounds over internet about an air conditioned pair of shoe coupled with a sizzling Headline; named ‘Muremure Nonnon'. This shoe uses just a USB- POWERED PUMP that blasts out air of flexible short hose. If that sounds weird you’ll be amazed by another invention in the same league of keeping you cool An ‘Ice Vest’.

But with those miniature pair of shoes you could have hide your feet under the desk and no one would be the wiser. But it’s next to impossible to hide the ridiculousness of wearing this Flexi Freeze Ice Vest.

The vest's is made of three panels (removable) which can house a total of 96 cubes in all; said to contain a gel material like one used in freezer packs for a cooler.so it’d a bit dismaying that you would not be able to sacrifice any cube for your Soda.
Well, if its creator is believed the vest is actually designed for people working in high temperature spaces, Or for people that are heat sensitive and have a problem with summers.

It’s a $65 buy, but you really need to be daring to wear it because it could make you a ridiculous topic for the coming days for your co-workers.

You might not find this jacket a good long term solution for the searing summers but Okaya Power batteries is one solution that keeps you on the go all day long. These ingenious batteries are designed to give you vast backup solutions and help you not to get tangled with Awkward ‘shoes and vests’. Let it be your home or vehicle you’d need a strong battery to keep you cool.
